AMORROMA duo
Amorroma duo is a new adventure and a fresh musical direction with Sarah L. Ridy (triple harp or arpa doppia) and Jowan Merckx (whistles & recorders, various instruments, percussion and singing) as a central duo, playing their own songs, all embedded in the best pan European tradition, with influences from ancient and traditional music, and chanson.
Jowan Merckx played and worked with Capilla Flamenca, Zefira torna, E. Van Nevel, Ialma, Wannes Vande Velde, Laïs, Carlos Nunez, Helen Flaherty, Naragonia and many other bands, with whom he toured during years all over the world. Jowan finds his happiness in old music, be it from the middle ages, the renaissance, barok or divers European traditions. His own band Amorroma established a highly respected place in the world of traditional music.
Sarah L. Ridy gained both bachelor and master degrees in as well the pedal harp as the baroque harp, which she fell in love with during the World Hap Congress in Geneva. Sarah performs and appears in numerous ensembles as well in Belgium as in Holland and further, all rooted in ancient music. She has performed as far afield as Israel, Greece and Slovenia and also performs solo concerts. Sarah is always excited by the prospect of exploring new repertoire for the baroque harp.
With the additional help of longtime Amorroma compagnon Vincent Noiret on double bass and the intriguing vocals of Elly Aerden, Amorrroma duo recorded in march “Là-bas dans ces vallons”.
Compared to previous albums “Là-bas dans ces vallons” underwent some important changes. This is the first album that contains touching vocals and mesmerizing lyrics, and it especially makes a fresh start. They discovered a new sound and the teamwork between recorders and harp, gives the music a surprisingly fresh approach that should win the hearts of all open minded music loving fans all over the world.
Elly Aerden (vocals) zingt bij Bodixel samen met o.a. Ludo Vandeau. Zij brengen cross-over met geëngageerde wereldmuziek en chanson. Samen met Florejan Verschueren staat ze aan de basis van Mairan (poëtische folk met een pop-attitude). Ze speelt piano en creëert haar melodieën als de avond valt.
Met haar eigen groep Eleonor probeert ze zangervaring, emotionele beleving en topmuzikanten samen te brengen in een eigenzinnig project met mediterrane- en jazzinvloeden, gezongen in Latijn. Voor Folklof stelde ze haar eigen balorkest samen, the folklove orchestra. Hemelse folk, met wereldse invloeden.
Namurois Vincent Noiret (double bass) begon zijn opleiding als autodidact maar volgt later jazz in de academie met Nathalie Loriers en Pierre Van Dormael. In 1996 sluit hij aan bij het Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel in de klas van Bart De Nolf en begint zijn projecten te vergroten en zijn muzikale horizon te verbreden. Het is tenslotte in de traditionele muziek dat zijn talenten het meest worden opgemerkt en hij raakt aldus betrokken bij veel projecten uit de Belgische scene (Didier Laloy, Luc Pilartz, Pascal Chardome, Jowan Merckx, Ialma, Photis Ionatos, Steve Houben, Oscar Beek, Stephanie Blanchoud …). Vincent ontpopt zich tot schrijver en muzikale leider van diverse ensembles waarin hij deel neemt. In 1999 start hij Tricycle samen met de accordeonist Tuur Florizoone en clarinetiste Kurt Budé (later vervangd door Philippe Laloy) en sindsdien toeren ze succesvol in binnen- en buitenland. In 2006 nam hij met de groep Amorroma de cd "Balance" op, waarvoor hij een DVD maakte met traditionele dansen van onze regio's. Vincent werkt ook al 6 jaar samen met Ghalia Benali, een samenkomst tussen westerse en oosterse werelden. In 2010 brengt hij ook een meer persoonlijk programma genoemd "Facing the ghost" met eigen composities in een stijl tussen jazz en wereld muziek.
